George Shafranov, M.D.

George Shafranov, M.D., is a board-certified ophthalmologist and a glaucoma specialist. Before joining Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region, Dr. Shafranov ran his own ophthalmology practice for thirteen years in Guildford, Connecticut and taught at Yale University as a faculty member. Dr. Shafranov was not only an associate professor and faculty member within Yale’s Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, but he also was the Director of the Glaucoma Section of the department for six years.

Dr. Shafranov enjoys working with individual patients to help them achieve their best possible vision through the treatment of glaucoma.
He is also passionate about contributing to further advancements in the field of glaucoma research. Since 1999, Dr. Shafranov has been
a reviewer for the Journal of Glaucoma, a forum for ophthalmologists to explore new approaches to diagnosis and innovations in pharmacological therapy and surgical technique, and he continues in his role as a clinical associate professor of ophthalmology and visual science at Yale University.


Dr. Shafranov received his medical degree from First Leningrad Medical School in St. Petersburg, Russia, after which he completed post-doctorate work at the School of Medicine and Social Hygiene, also in St. Petersburg. After completing certification to practice in the United States, Dr. Shafranov participated in an internship at New York University Medical Center followed by his ophthalmology fellowship and residency at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York City. He also completed a glaucoma fellowship at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky.


Dr. Shafranov is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Shafranov has been a primary investigator in numerous clinical studies and has been published in several ophthalmology journals, including Glaucoma Today and Ophthalmology. He also co-wrote the clinically focused and practical textbook for ophthalmologists, Shields’ Textbook of Glaucoma.

Dr. Shafranov has presented lectures and courses on glaucoma-related research at ophthalmology conferences worldwide, such as at the Pan-American Congress of Ophthalmology in Santiago, Chile and San Juan, Puerto Rico and at the World Ophthalmology Congress in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
