Corneal Dystrophies

Corneal dystrophies are a group of rare genetic eye disorders in which one or more parts of the cornea lose their normal clarity due to a buildup of material that clouds the cornea.

There are more than 20 types of corneal dystrophies, and, in general, these disorders are:

  • Usually inherited
  • Affect both eyes
  • Progress gradually
  • Do not affect other parts of the body and aren’t related to diseases affecting other parts of the eye or body
  • Occur in otherwise healthy people

The age of onset and specific symptoms vary among the different forms of corneal dystrophy, and they can affect vision in different ways. Corneal dystrophies may not cause symptoms in some individuals and are only discovered during a routine eye exam, while in others they may cause significant vision impairment and discomfort.
