ALBANY, NEW YORK, NOVEMBER 4, 2013—Through SEE International, a humanitarian non-profit organization, Dr. Allen Zieker of Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region traveled to Panama City, Panama, last month. He performed cataract surgery on over 25 patients during his brief visit. Joined by Dr. Francis Nathan from Adelaide, Australia, they worked closely with the host ophthalmologist Dr. Ruben Orillac. “Traveling to Panama and being part of this amazing team was an experience I will not soon forget,” said Dr. Allen Zieker.”
Many of the patients Dr. Allen Zieker treated were either completely blind, or close to it. “Some of these people haven’t
been able to see in over 10 years, and they’re going to see again,” explained Dr. Allen Zieker. “It’s exciting. Every single eye represented an opportunity to give the patient back the ability to live a full, productive life.” Dr. Allen Zieker said.
Since 1974, SEE International has facilitated more than 400,000 surgeries in developing countries. In 2012, SEE International surgeons visited 33 countries and facilitated 10,208 surgeries.
Dr. Allen Zieker, a board certified ophthalmologist, serves as President of Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region and the Director of Cataract Surgery.
