Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness worldwide, and it is estimated that 3 million people in America have glaucoma. To meet the glaucoma treatment needs of the Capital Region, Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region (OCCR) is proud to welcome a new glaucoma specialist to its team, Dr. Shafiq Jivanjee.

“There has been a severe shortage of glaucoma specialists not only in the Capital Region but nationally,” said Dr. Allen Zieker, president of Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region. “For several years we’ve been looking for the right people with the right skill set to join our practice. We’re very happy to announce the addition of a glaucoma specialist, Dr. Jivanjee, to OCCR. We now have the ability to meet the glaucoma treatment needs of our community.”

Joining OCCR is Dr. Shafiq Jivanjee, a board-certified ophthalmologist and glaucoma specialist with more than 20 years of experience in the field. He  comes to OCCR after practicing as a comprehensive ophthalmologist and glaucoma specialist in the private sector.

Dr. Jivanjee’s expertise includes cataracts combined with glaucoma management, from the simple to the complex, tailoring treatment needs to each individual patient. He is a specialist in minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), the latest advance in the surgical treatment of glaucoma, as he is committed to providing treatment options that are considerably less invasive, more effective, and speedier in recovery than traditional techniques. “When looking at doctors to join our practice, we not only want to find surgeons who are at the top of their field and knowledgeable about the latest treatment options,” Dr. Zieker said, “but it’s also imperative to find physicians who are committed to each patient and offering them the best, most comprehensive, customized care that will fit their individual needs. Dr. Jivanjee is such a practitioner, and we are looking forward to having him as a part of the OCCR practice.”

Making up the team of glaucoma surgeons at OCCR, Dr. Jivanjee joins Dr. Nalini A. Madiwale, who has been treating OCCR’s glaucoma patients since 1999. Dr. Madiwale is specifically trained and educated on the latest treatment options for glaucoma and focuses on surgical glaucoma procedures. Alongside her medical practice, Dr. Madiwale has had the honor of serving on the faculty of one of the world’s most respected medical schools: Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, as well as the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, New York.
