In his 36-year career, ophthalmologist Dr. Allen Zieker estimates he’s performed more than 30,000 eye care operations. He now completes about 1,500 cataract surgeries annually, about 40 to 60 in a week. It all started when he bought a practice with two exam rooms in 1984. That became Albany-Troy Cataract and Laser Associates, which expanded into what’s now Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region. The practice has five offices and 72 exam rooms. It employs 14 doctors and 132 staff, and there are plans to add another doctor later this year.
How do you think you were able to grow the practice so much? We kept focusing on patients’ needs, delivering good results and sharing patients with the optometric community. I think with good results, eventually word of mouth was key.
It’s also who you associate with. One of my best choices was hiring Bob Sax as a retina specialist. He later became my business partner, and without him, I wouldn’t be where I am today. The two of us built something even bigger, and we continue to build that.
Within the community of eye care, you have ophthalmologists, optometrists and opticians. It was always my goal to try to get all three under one roof, which had not really been done a whole lot before…
